More and more people are interested in getting their own chickens. It’s a great trend! But if you are thinking of jumping on the bandwagon and getting chickens in 2021, there are a few things you should do right now to prepare.
Order Your Chicks
If you’re getting chickens in 2021, you should order your chicks early. Many major hatcheries sold out of the most popular breeds last year. That goes for egg layers, meat chickens and turkeys. So, if you want to have your choice of breeds or dates, it’s time to place your order.
Set Your Processing Date
If you’re doing turkeys or meat chickens in 2021 and are taking them to a processor instead of butchering them yourself, schedule your processing ASAP. In fact, I’d check with your processor before buying your chicks. Small poultry processors were extremely busy in 2020 and had very limited availability. It was tough to get a date if you waited too long. Get on the schedule now and you’ll have peace of mind.
I recommend ordering your supplies ahead of time. Items were in and out of stock all summer last year. I know Premier One Electric Poultry Netting – which is essential for my laying hens and turkeys – was out of stock multiple times throughout the season. Local farm supply stores in my area had trouble keeping chicken feeders and waterers on the shelves too.
To Sum Up…
Don’t hesitate. If this is something you want to do, start now. Beat the crazy spring rush so you can get the products, services, dates and breeds you want.
